The Latest Development: Parr Lumber
Matthew Overton
About a month and a half ago I was invited to meet with the CEO of Parr Lumber. I knew at the time that Parr ran a number of lumber yards here in the Pacific Northwest. What I didn't know was that they are about the 15th biggest building supply manufacturers in the United States! Essentially, someone from my church had shared about the jobs and mentoring program we are running at Columbia.
As it turns out, Parr has difficulty finding quality full time workers. They have a number of ways that they solve that problem, but they were wondering if we might be able to find the right kind of students to fill 40 hour a week benefited jobs. Parr seems like an excellent company. They do a lot of profit sharing, offer great benefits, and believe in promoting heavily from within their organization. I have agreed to experiment with this idea with a few students to see if we can go into the local schools and perhaps partner with them to find jobs for some of their graduating students who might need to pay for college or might not be going on to college.
So far, it looks like we might have a couple of students and schools that are already interested. The next step is to meet with the managers at Parr to see what their specific needs are. I don't know exactly where this is all headed, but I am excited to have the opportunity to work with a company like Parr. It would be absolutely amazing to get to bless the families of Clark County with this sort of program! I am actively wondering what other businesses might be out there and willing to employ and develop teenagers! Pray for us!!!
